Autogenic Relaxation

I did this relaxation technique at five in the morning on Saturday.  It was nice because the house was quiet and I was in bed. I must admit that although the voice was soothing and so was the music, I am not used to a male voice in a relaxation exercise.  It also was weird to listen to him talk about all the blood in the GI tract and the abdominal cavity.

Never the less I did try and I did relax and my hands did feel a little warmth although I did not ever get the sense of heaviness that was described. I was comfortable so my arms were content to stay where they were but they were not really heavy.

I do have trouble relaxing totally, my mind is usually always going so this will take some practice. I have so much going on right now I am afraid if I relax too much something will get missed.  I know that is not a good way to be, so if you have any suggestions I will listen.

  1. It is hard to relax and you are right to say that this is going to take some time. When I used to practice meditation on a daily basis, I recall my first time as being "chaotic", my mind and thoughts were all over the place they were so quick that by the time I realize I have diverted, it is too late. But again nothing is ever too late. I also think that one huge hindrance to meditation is being afraid of your mind getting distracted so the key word is to "let go" and when thoughts enter the mind, acknowledge and then let go, very gently, easier said than done...but you'll get there:)

  2. I was introduce to autogenic relaxation technique by one of my sister. I use to have chronic migraines that was affecting my vision. She gave me her CDs that had soft classical music in the background with a male instructor guiding you through the process of relaxing. I must admit that it was very challenging at first, but as I develop my mastery in relaxation, it became easier to accomplish. Meditation can be difficult for the beginner, but after several practices it can be mastered.

Visualization was another technique that I decided to use along with my meditation. It was easy for me to master because I am a visual person.

Meditation can be difficult at first, and that is because as individuals our mind is preoccupied with events that occur that day or prior days. We must learn to take control of our emotions and not let them control us.

  3. Donna,
I need to try this autogenic relaxation exercise as sometimes I have a hard time relaxing too with all the excitement in my house.
