Can You Lead?

The term "one cannot lead another where one has not gone himself " is definitely important for any health care provider.  It is important if you are trying to teach someone how to develop their psychological and spiritual then it is important to be developing your own as well.  Unless you have been to a place whether it be a physical place like a different country or an emotional place you cannot tell another person how to get around in that place unless you are familiar with it.

In order to help your clients you should not only teach them the exercises but also do them with them and take the time to get their feedback as to what works for them and what they need to work on.  This is not only true for emotional and spiritual journeys but physical ones as well.  If you are trying to help someone to become physically fit you should be physically fit as well.

The bottom line is be a good role model.

  1. Donna,

I agree that in order for a healthcare professional to direct a client down a path, the healthcare professional has to have traveled that path also at one time or the other. You cannot show someone a path or road you have never been down or have knowledge of yourself.

I am a similar supervisor on the job to the type of healthcare professional we are training to be. When I have been a supervisor in whatever job I was in, I never told someone to do a task without getting up to my elbows in the project side-by-side with that person I have directed to do a task. Usually after I have gotten into the project that the coworker later asks me if there is something else that I could and should be doing that they can handle this task themselves. I believe in directing by showing and leading by example so I think that I should be an effective healthcare professional to assist my clients with living fuller more capable lives by showing an example of such.

  2. Hi there, yes, you are right, I think it would be quite hard for someone to keep the extra pounds of if the instructor himself/herself does not maintain their weight at a healthy level. Seeing is believing. It is nice that you believe in showing and leading by example as I am sure that many would benefit from that!
